Drew Dominguez

misc. portraits

October 23, 2020-January 3, 2021

Opening reception Friday, October 23, 5-9 pm

POMPEI proudly presents as its inaugural show and Drew Dominguez's first solo show, misc. portraits.

A collection of collaged portraits of friends–cigarette boxes, packaging, photographs, receipts, matchbooks, ticket stubs, playing cards… layered and pasted onto individual canvases then positioned together–become personalized offerings to the subsequent viewer.

The artist requested materials from each friend–a collection of personal effects, discarded items and often-overlooked ephemera–to tell a story and create a record of everyday exchanges, allowing an intimate glimpse into a person’s life and memories.

These portraits invite the observer to simultaneously become acquainted with the subjects and to find themselves and their own memories reflected in the work, ultimately revealing just how universal our desires, tendencies, and needs are, how interchangeable our representations of each other can be, and how often the things we discard may tell more about us than the things we keep.

misc. portraits will be accompanied by a short run book of images from the works.
