INSTALLATION IMAGES AND CATALOGUE
POMPEI is pleased to present Mixtape, our second solo show with artist Drew Dominguez, a selection of works from his recent series of photo-collages and sculptures relating to DIY cosmetic repairs to automobiles.
The body of work originated with photographing the different ways car owners tape up their broken tail lights, side mirrors, bumpers, etc. After amassing a collection of related materials, Drew began experimenting with the boundary between image and object, transforming his printed photographs into two and three-dimensional works that vary in scale.
By considering the car as an extension of one’s self, Drew began to imagine the use of duct tape, not only as a quick utilitarian means of fixing a car, but also possibly as a subconscious aesthetic performance by the car owners themselves.
In the studio while composing these works, he utilized the same materials — nodding to tape’s role in art history for painters and in assemblage — and embracing its inherent value as a mark-making tool. With bold use of color, texture, and scale, Drew celebrates this mode of expression while encouraging the viewer to take a closer look at daily life, and to consider our sometimes unintentional participation in the creation of new forms.
POMPEI is a creative project space and gallery founded by J Grabowski and Jacqueline Pompei. POMPEI is open to the public Saturdays and Sundays, 2-6 pm, and Monday-Friday, by appointment.
